+81 Magazine Vol.96: The Future of Book Design and Publishing issue

This issue, themed “The Future of Book Design and Publishing,” reexamines the value of the physical book as an object. In Chapter 1, we feature book designers such as Irma Boom, Theseus Chan, Satoshi Machiguchi, and OK-RM, who explore the possibilities of books through experimental approaches. Chapter 2 introduces legendary works by graphic design masters—including Jonathan Barnbrook, Stefan Sagmeister, and Hideki Nakajima—who have shaped the times. Chapter 3 focuses on independent publishers such as Loose Joints, Actual Source, and Roma Publications, which function as hubs in their scenes, bringing their local cultures to the world through the format of the book.︎


This project is published by Fedrigoni, an Italian multinational paper company established in 1888. This book brings together the work of eight highly accomplished international publication designers, including: Lorenz Klingebiel (Germany), Eduardo Aires (Portugal), Sulki & Min (South Korea), Studio Mut (Italy), Matt Willey (United States), Fanette Mellier (France), David Pearson (United Kingdom), and Wang Zhi-Hong (Taiwan). Each designer’s portfolio is presented alongside an interview, offering an overview of their background and professional practice.
